US primary insurer The Allstate Corporation expects aggregate reinsurance recoveries of approximately $123 million, as catastrophe losses in March saw the firm surpasses the retention level of its annual aggregate reinsurance cover for the annual risk period ending March 31st, 2025.<\/p>\n

\"AllstateThe recoveries are expected to lower Allstate’s reported March catastrophe losses, estimated at $1.04 billion, or $818 million after tax.<\/p>\n

Notably, Allstate’s aggregate reinsurance protection for this annual period was solely provided through its Sanders Re series of catastrophe bonds. This means that investors in possibly two of the tranches of these bonds are likely to face reductions in their principal, as reported by our ILS-focused sister publication, Artemis.<\/p>\n

Allstate’s annual aggregate reinsurance risk period spans from April 1st, 2024, to March 31st, 2025. By the end of February 2025, the insurer’s pre-tax catastrophe losses since the beginning of this period had already reached approximately $5.4 billion.<\/p>\n

Adding the just over $1 billion in pre-tax losses incurred in March brings the total for the annual risk period to roughly $6.4 billion.<\/p>\n

$50 million event deductibles apply for the aggregate cat bond tranches, and the attachment for the lowest of the two aggregate cat bond tranches sits at $3.6 billion of qualifying losses.<\/p>\n

March’s catastrophe losses were driven by 11 events, with approximately 80% attributed to four widespread wind and hail incidents. Total catastrophe losses for the first quarter of 2025 reached $2.20 billion, or $1.74 billion after tax.<\/p>\n

Looking at policy numbers for March 2025 compared to the previous year, Allstate’s auto policies in force experienced a slight decrease to 25,100 from 25,207. However, homeowners policies showed some growth, increasing by 2.5% to 7,549 from 7,364.<\/p>\n

Other personal lines also saw a small increase to 4,874 from 4,849. Notably, commercial lines policies decreased by 30.8%, falling to 189 from 273 in March 2024.<\/p>\n

Despite these fluctuations across different lines, Allstate’s total policies in force for March 2025 showed a slight positive trend, reaching 37,712 compared to the 37,693 policies in force during the same period in 2024.<\/p>\n
