Mandarin Re\u2019s Chief Underwriting Officer, Arthur Underwood, is urging the reinsurance industry to adopt a more forward-looking approach to risk evaluation and mitigation, as traditional models struggle to keep pace with fast-emerging threats.<\/p>\n

He warned that current frameworks, which still rely heavily on past data and established patterns, are becoming less reliable in today\u2019s environment.<\/p>\n

According to Underwood, the reinsurance sector must evolve beyond retrospective analysis. \u201cTo adapt, the industry must embrace a forward-looking approach to risk evaluation and mitigation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

This involves using advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning to process and interpret large-scale data, ultimately leading to better predictive insights and more accurate risk pricing.<\/p>\n

Underwood also highlighted the human element in strengthening the industry\u2019s resilience. \u201cThe industry should also keep investing in people, especially underwriters,\u201d he said. As the nature of risk evolves, underwriting expertise must evolve with it. Ongoing training and exposure to emerging threats will help underwriters anticipate and respond more effectively to future challenges.<\/p>\n

In a time when risk is increasingly complex and interconnected, Underwood’s message is clear: relying on outdated models is no longer an option. Reinsurers must shift their mindset\u2014embracing both technological innovation and deeper cross-sector collaboration\u2014to stay relevant and resilient in the years ahead.<\/p>\n
