ICEYE, a provider of satellite-based disaster response technologies, has introduced Flood Rapid Impact (FRI) — a new solution designed to provide automated, near-real-time flood data to emergency response teams, energy providers, insurers, and financial institutions.

""FRI supplies critical information about floodwater extent within 6 to 12 hours of the earliest signs of an event.

By using data collected from ICEYE’s synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite constellation — capable of capturing imagery in all weather and lighting conditions — FRI offers a timely picture of where flooding is occurring and which regions are most affected.

Machine learning algorithms process this data to estimate the scale of flooding, which is then delivered through the ICEYE Event Intelligence Hub and refreshed every 6–12 hours as conditions change.

ICEYE’s global weather monitoring team operates around the clock, tracking conditions and directing satellite coverage where flooding is likely. With the largest SAR satellite constellation in operation, the company is able to maintain consistent and timely surveillance of vulnerable areas.

The speed and precision of FRI allow decision-makers to quickly understand the scope and impact of a flood. Emergency managers can assess damage earlier, coordinate response efforts more efficiently, and allocate resources based on current ground conditions.

For insurers, the tool enables faster and more accurate estimates of potential losses, earlier engagement with policyholders, and quicker deployment of claims personnel to affected locations.

FRI expands ICEYE’s range of flood monitoring products by offering frequent updates during an event. While ICEYE’s Flood Insights provides detailed analysis of flood depth and peak extent within 24 hours, FRI gives an ongoing, evolving picture of the flood’s progression from the start.

Most recently, ICEYE worked alongside local and federal authorities in central Texas during catastrophic flooding, providing real-time data that supported emergency and recovery operations.

Andy Read, Global Head of Government Solutions, ICEYE, commented: “Flood Rapid Impact tells the story of the event with greater frequency and resolution. It’s like giving responders a real-time heartbeat monitor for the disaster–allowing them to track how the flood evolves moment by moment and respond before conditions worsen.”

Rupert Bidwell, VP Insurance Solutions, ICEYE, added: “We are not only seeing an increase in flood events, but also flooding affecting multiple areas simultaneously, whether in the same country or across multiple countries, as was seen during Storm Boris. This makes it extremely challenging for insurers to understand the scale of the impact quickly.

“In such a highly dynamic situation, access to ground-level data as flood waters expand is vital for the insurance industry. Within six hours, Flood Rapid Impact gives companies critical insights to support customers in the hardest-hit areas, disseminating accurate information across your teams and beyond, and taking control of a rapidly evolving situation.”
